The Burial of the Count of Orgaz (1586?C1588, oil on canvas, 480 ?? 360 cm, Santo Tom??, Toledo), now El Greco's best known work, illustrates a popular local legend. An exceptionally large painting, it is clearly divided into two zones: the heavenly above and the terrestrial below, brought together compositionally.
